Peer Mentoring

A select group of senior sociology majors serve as peer mentors to younger sociology majors, minors, and those interested in majoring or minoring in sociology.

You can contact the peer mentors using Learnlink. Search Public Conferences for the Sociology Conference and post your questions on the Ask the Mentors subconference.

Peer mentors are able to answer questions on a wide variety of topics, including questions about:
  • the major and minor in sociology
  • the pros and cons of double majoring
  • internships, studying abroad, favorite classes
  • post-college career plans
  • making the transition from Oxford to Emory
  • the Honors Program in sociology

The peer mentors' interests cover our major areas in sociology (e.g., criminology, law, public health, political sociology, social psychology, communications and journalism, public policy, and medicine).

Below is the list of peer mentors and their interests.

My name is Kevin Kelly and I'm a senior from Western Springs, IL (just outside Chicago).  I'm currently in the sociology combined BA/MA program and will be graduating with a political science minor as well.  Last December I took the GRE and can help you with questions about that.  My Master's thesis will be focused on symphonic orchestra repertoire and the establishment and changes of this "classical canon" (where certain composers are performed more often).  I am happy to answer any questions you may have about the BA/MA program, research, classes, or about the sociology major in general.  The soc classes I've taken are:

  • SOC 101: Intro to General Sociology (Schrimsher)
  • SOC 221: Culture and Society (Dowd)
  • SOC 245: Individual and Society (Hegvedt)
  • SOC 325: Sociology of Film (Hicks)
  • SOC 355WR: Social Research I (Mullis)
  • SOC 356S/500: Social Research II (Social Statistics) (Mullis)
  • SOC 443S: Sociology of Music
  • SOC 457WR: Development of Sociological Theory
  • SOC 585 - Advanced Graduate Topics: Qualitative Research

In addition to those classes, I've received credit for two semesters worth of research (SOC 499R) and credit (SOC 498R) for TAing the undergraduate methods class SOC 355.  I also completed the Certificate Program in Research and Data Analysis (with Dr. Archibald).  In the fall, I will be taking my final graduate class (SOC 561: Sociology of the Arts) and beginning work on my Master's thesis.  I wish you all the best of luck.  Feel free to send me an email with any questions you may have.
